Known as DART 1, ARTA has delivered Newmarket a smart new, recently completed railway station.
Choosing the surface for the platforms was a lengthy process, and with the assistance of the paving contractor, AJ Russell Ltd, a Jagas honed paver was selected. The 400x400x60mm paver was considered for its aesthetic appearance, strength and durability.
New Zealand sourced basalt was the main aggregate used and a small percentage of Australian Quartz to brighten the appearance as surrounding multi-level buildings shadow the site.
The basalt and quartz pavers were manufactured using a topping method helping to control the cost and use age of these materials. Jagas standard 40mpa backing mix was used to make up the thickness of the 60mm paver.
Stefan Geelen from Opus comments:
“The modern, elegant, and high quality station required durable and visually appealing floor surfaces due to its Newmarket location and importance in the Auckland rail network. The same concrete mix and variations were used extensively throughout the job as in situ concrete, reflecting the internal/external nature of different spaces in the station. At street level the finish is exposed and the main concourse is honed and cut into the appearance of large flag stones.
The design paver choice, design, size and layout needed to meet the intent and requirements as well as correspond with other floor surfaces. The paver layout at 45 degrees to the platform edge visually breaks up the long platform length providing visual interest”.

A J Russell Ltd laid the paving to the predefined laying and cutting pattern. Graham Fairweather, A J Russell Ltd’s General Manager had many consultations with the main contractor, Hawkins and the Architects at Opus as to the best methodology to lay the pavers.
Graham comments “It is this collaboration that contributes to the success of projects like this. This was not an easy job but with communication between all parties the best job possible was achieved”.
Safety around the platforms is paramount. Safety yellow Tactile Ground Surface Indicators boldly line the platform. These tactile indicators clearly identify dangers and notable features for visually impaired pedestrians. The tactile pavers are manufactured by Jagas Paving for Mobility Research Centre, who work in close association with the Royal NZ Foundation of the Blind.
Michael Brown from the Mobility Research Group says
“ARTA should be commended in the completion of yet another station that allows visually impaired people to freely and safely navigate the railway network.
Without the use of tactile indicators blind and partially sighted people may not have the confidence or ability to travel independently.”
A proud New Zealand company, Jagas pavers are individually hand made and crafted to a high standard.
Jagas have a selection of standard colours, sizes and textures within the ranges they offer.
As with the Newmarket Railway Station, there are options to custom make the colour, size and texture.
The honed paver gives added options to change aggregates or pebbles used.
