Architectural Designers New Zealand Inc. (ADNZ) is the national professional body representing architectural designers. ADNZ Professional and Associate members are located in their own practices throughout New Zealand. View the ADNZ website.

The national winners of the ADNZ/Resene Design Awards were announced at the ADNZ/Resene Gala Dinner held in the Wellington Foyer of Te Papa, Wellington as part of the annual ADNZ Conference. ADNZ Members, National Office staff, ADNZ Sponsors and friends came together for a black-tie event filled with support and celebration.

With over 100 entries nationwide six designs stood out from the pack, claiming all nine awards.

This year Architectural Designers New Zealand members were invited to submit entries across seven categories, including residential, commercial and industrial projects. All entries were then eligible for the Resene Colour in Design Award and the prestigious Supreme Design Award.

The ADNZ/Resene Design Awards are about celebrating excellence and showcasing the talent and creative influence of architects and architectural designers across New Zealand. The judging panel this year consisted of Tony van Raat, Tim Dagg and Ross Maguire.

Richard Wilden Broad Bay House

The house sits in its natural landscape with effortless composure. A relaxed plan bends easily around the contour, organised by a powerful connecting corridor. Modestly assembled with a simple strength appropriate to its site, this represents an exemplary engagement with the landscape.

Leinster House by Cymon Allfrey

Winner: Residential New Home over 250 sq Design Award sponsored by James Hardie; Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award sponsored by Elephant Plasterboard

Cymon Allfrey Leinster House

Leinster house by Cymon Allfrey was also named as The 2011 Supreme Winner

A beautifully-composed house which establishes exemplary relationships to its garden. The house is directly but dramatically planned around an organising central axis which expands into a series of calm and elegant terraces. Still and orderly this reflects the great skill and control of its designer.

There is a seamless connection between the interior and exterior of this finely wrought house.  Full control of every aspect of the design has resulted in an entirely consistent design language throughout.

Karaka Bay by Angus McDonald

Winner: Residential Multi-Unit Dwelling Design Award

Angus McDonald Karaka Bay

An excellently-scaled project with fine relationship to context of bush and coastline.  Strong cladding materials are interspersed to create a high level of visual interest.  This is an interesting and very successful solution to the problem of multi-unit housing.

Judge & Jury Cottage by Matthew White

Joint winner; Residential Alterations and Additions Design Award

Matthew White Judge & Jury

A charmingly modest and controlled alteration and refurbishing of an existing cottage in a remarkable natural landscape.  The designer has fully appreciated the best qualities of the building and has developed them with appropriate constraint.

The Pepper House by Tony Biesiek

Joint Winner: Residential Alterations and Additions Design Award

Tony Biesiek Pepper House

This complete renovation of a modest cottage into a complex and satisfying suburban house respects the street whilst transforming the ‘lived’ experience of the dwelling.  The interior spaces have great clarity, and relationship with the outside is achieved by a delightful roofed veranda on the first floor.  Notable for its unobtrusive commitment to sustainable design.

Bright Wild Thomas by Darryl Church

Winner: Commercial/Industrial Design Award sponsored by Colorsteel; Commercial Interior Design Award; Resene Colour In Design Award

DCA Darryl Church Architecture Bright Wild Thomas

DCA Darryl Church

An elegant and sophisticated reworking of an existing commercial building. A new glass skin and canopy transforms this building. Depth, shading and reflection create a sense of shifting and movement for the viewer.

This is an austere and beautifully-controlled exercise in interior design, enhanced by carefully considered lighting.  The designer has managed every aspect of this conversion with great skill.

Simple, clean and effective, the use of little colour has been cleverly enhanced by architectural lighting and graphics to provide interesting form and texture – all on a tight budget
